Afraid of Nicaragua?« on: March 04 2006 13:03:00 »
Don't let anyone who posts negativity about Nicaragua fool you. I moved here last summer with my wife and two kids under 2years. We pile in the 4X4 and drive all over. People have been nothing but great, and my biggest complaint has been lack of surf buddies, especially west of Managua and North.
Yes, South gets crowded, but if you've come from Cal, a crowd is relative. Aslo, with car you can almost always surf alone. Yes, there is petty crime in SJDS, but not nearly like Costa Rica or LA for that matter.
I understand the bitter local posts- grew up in Encinitas when it was small town and did my share of harrasment, but I'm older and more generous. If you come here, you won't regret it.

Wow, we really need to get out of Baja, it's changed so radically, but have to wait for Mike to retire. I'm envious of you guys...Encinitas? Remember when there were just motels, health food places and surf shops? Heh-heh, a San Diego Native here. Well, we had it good, time to move on.

Yeah, Margie, we did have it good in Encinitas. There are still shades of what it used to be west of 101. My family goes back to 1800s there, so it will always have a place in my soul. When Baja gets too crazy for you, see you in Nicaragua.

OK keep your fingers crossed. Yep, it's really such a double edged sword, as countries develop like Mexico, which is now considered an emerging industrial nation instead of a third world country, the opportunities for people are supposedly increased for a higher standard of living and a better life, but usually at the cost of pristine geographical areas, case in point, Harry's, north of Ensenada. And what is really scary here, is that everything is so corrupt and stop gaps to protect the environment are few.Sometimes there are little victories, which are helpful, but generally overwhelmed or overturned by big money. If Escalera Nautica goes through, which it probably will, kiss Baja goodbye.
Not to end on a sour note, best regards to you & your family, you lucky dawg! XXXOOO
Escalera mexico« Reply #5 on: April 07 2006 11:04:00 »
I looked up the Escalera on google. Wow, I hate to say it, but you know it will eventually pass. $ always wins, so we only can hope it is used wisely. I grew up traveling Baja solo and with friends. Sea of Cortez is like nothing in the world, so I'd hate to see it ruined..
Buena Suerte. Steve

Yea, I'm hep Steve. There are some petitions out there, if you google in Surfers against Escalera Nautica. Also a video if you google in Harry's Surf Spot. I have never met him, but a fellow by the name of Serg has been high profile and instrumental in fighting this, and educating all of us gringos. So, if you're out there, thank you Serg. Oh for sure, Sea Of Cortez, love it . We usually camp at Playa Coyote and usually go for the month of November, but we are saving for the New Zealand trip this year, and a really kind of quirky side trip to Bougainville & Choiseul.
Meanwhile, enjoy it while you can, and MAYBE this Valerie Plame deal will hopefully bring the fawker Bush down to his knees. Wouldn't that be somethin?

Margie, "it's obvious" is all I need to hear. Me not knowing what Escalera is as innocent as you not knowing Leya de Costas de Nicaragua. You make big assumptions, like my leftward leaning wife when she first met me. After we talked and she could see an opposing view could be intelligent, we agree to disagree with great respect for one another. Being that I think you'll read into whatever I write based on your personal bias that I voted Bush, I'll stop here. With true sincerety, I wish you all the best.
