SJDS is a mainstay for travelers. You can hook up with others there, locals and tourists. There a some decent breaks around there but better ones up north. North has less for accomodation and food. However there are a few places to stay there depending on what you are looking for.
Good Luck with the Surf and enjoy the great people of Nicaragua.

I surfed Nicaragua last year, and it was stellar. My suggestion is to go to San Juan Del Sur and stay at the Joxy Hotel. It's super cheap, and pretty safe. There are daily boat trips that go to a whole bunch of breaks like Pongo (gnar) and Popoyo (even more gnar). Watch out though, Nicaragua is kinda sketchy, especially if you don't speak spanish. Stay off the beach at night, and you should be fine, Buenas Olas

My wife and I are heading to Nica next week and we will be spending a few nights in SJdS. Is it possible to rent boards there? If so, where? If not, what type and size boards should I bring? Are there any good surf guides that could take us out for a day or two?

Surf camp Nicaragua near Rivas« Reply #9 on: June 07 2005 09:06:00 »
It's possible to surf some good waves in Playa Gigante near Rivas.
We were in a surf camp (Momo surf camp). We surfed every day with the boat to find the best wave. It was great !!!! It's a small village of ficherman. Cool ambiant and safe. The food was correct.
San juan del Sur is not the best place to surf. Search Playa Gigante or Popoyo, Maderas. Nicaragua is a nice country.
