Check the lonely planet website or moon's nicaragua travel guide. I have found them both quite useful in planning our trip to Nica this coming fall.

nicaragua will costs lots !! the theives, the disease, crude
surivial for food & shelter, nica sharks circling (poor nica thieves) traveling surf for stealing all by your surfboard because everything else is left behind to ride a wave, they wait and bam , its you and a surf board !!  no passport,
no money, cloths its another feeding session for the nica land shark.
yes rains like the plague may-nov. and heavy sickness
spreads as the rain fuels the flies, animal waste products
enter the water tables and contamiate all well water with
lots of water born batericas, t.b., mucha blanca, malaria,
hep a, b, c, lepardces, flu, do yourself favor ,go surf usa !!

Oh yeah. I've seen the violence. If you go don't look at any locals in the eyes. That will only get there attention. Make sure you bring a small safe with you and hide or chain it in the room. Losing (stolen) a passport sucks. OH and bring no cash and if you can keep the credit cards on you while you surf. Maybe hide them on your body or in so the thieves won't jack you. Actually try El Salvador. Better waves and if you go to the Northern part it's very safe and they have security.
