take buses to Rivas, then try to get on the 9am bus going to las salinitas (or salinas, well, ask people the way to popoyo)..
you have to get down the bus where they tell you to, then you just wait until someone lets you get in their truck all the way to la tica 2...rooms are like $6.5, it s really close to the break, and there s nice food. everything you need is there...
dunno about surf rentals though

My girlfriend and I are also headed that way in late october. Is it possible to rent a place for longer stays. Say 4-5 months. We want a place to cook so we dont always have to eat out. Also, how much is board rental per day? Is there a large selection of boards available?

yo i got this new thing goin on, called asshole tours... we do a whole bunch of ass hole tings, like eat turtle eggs, drink and drive, we take boat trips out to the good spots and dump pigs guts in the line up,,, we beat up eco natzis, steal from back packers who already have it tough,,, drop in on people and pull guns on them if they complain,,, when the turtles hatch, instead of helping them to the water we toss them inland... im telling you its sooo much fun, free spirited.

Hey bro. Toro Surf (lodge) is $12 US for dorm pp. $20 US for a room pp. Maybe add it to your budget and spend the first few days looking to make a long stay deal at one of the cheaper surf camps at the end of the road. Stock up on food in Rivas. Bring a board or two and some extra leashes.

i'd like to travel up there out of season if there is a swell - will it be easy enough to find cheapo accomodation around the area - anyone got any names of places or people (locals) who are good to hook up with?

Just roll up to a locals house (or cafe) and strike up a conversation, pretty soon you will be living for free; just remember to treat them well and give them gratis (i.e buy food, supplies, etc.)
P.S. DON'T do this in Costa Rica as "Pure Vida" actually means "I'll ripe you blind".
