Surfing holiday in portugal for starters in april - help

« on: February 05 2009 14:02:00 »

Hi guys,

Me and some of the boys are thinking of going to portugal surfing and we are looking for some help as we are beginers so i have a few questions if you don't mind.

1 - We are thinking of going in April (probably the 9th) for a week. Where in portugal would be best to look?

2 - We are not sure what is best campsite, hotel or self catering but we would like a little comfort if possible, where is best and what type of accomodation?

3 - Does anyone know of a surf school that you can pay for all that is decent but not a rip off?

4 - We are looking to spend around £400 max on the holiday (not including spends) is this possible?

Cheers guys in advance and if you have any helpful suggestions then it would be appreciated!

Many thanks

Hi
One of the best options to get some waves is Ericeira, see if you like my house, 10 minutes from beaches but in a very quiet place.
www.casadaadega.blogs.sapo.pt, but there are some rooms to rent and the camping in the village too.
See the site of a friend, surf shop and school, www.xxs.pt
Other option is Peniche, very cool place and good to surf also.
If you need more info get in touch, i´m glad to help.

probly far to late a reply, but for the benefit of anyone else, i just did 10 days at Algarve Adventure surf camp in the south west. soooo good! real cheap for what you get, and i liked it cos it was so chilled out - not as structured as some other camps ive been to. the owners were awesome people, so im a die hard supporter of this camp! surfing was the focus but we also got to mountainbike and go rockclimbing. check out algarve-adventure.com... do it!

The trouble for beginners in portugal is onshore wind but there are a couple of places to go for beginners. prob the best is peniche, which has a handful of very different waves (including beginners beach break), with offshore options. lisbon is also an option but you'll be fighting with the crowds and ASP wannabees. april is good, nice and warm but you'll need 3/2 suits. there are a few surf schools in peniche, even a couple right on the beach, i had lesson with 58 surf shop and that was ok. you can either fly into lisbon and get a bus direct (about 2 hours) or fly to porto and make you way down. this is longer but you'll pass some great surf spots.  if you want to do it real cheap then there's a campsite in peniche and you could just buy lessons when you think you need them. good luck.

1 **I would go to the south. Fly into Lisboa, and take the bus direct to Lagos, then take another bus to Sagres....Sagres Natura surf shop is at the roundabout by supermarket, ask for Celso...he is cool.
2 - We are not sure what is best campsite, hotel or self cateringou could never beat this...this place is 200mtrs from the cliffs!!! Navigator apartment hotel..in Sagres..check it out.
3 - Does anyone know of a surf school Yep....Sagres Natura...same guy, his wife is Sara ask for either, They are super cool. Best instructor is Luis.
4 -  How many days...youll be golden on food and accomodation. If you dont want to rent a car....well I dont know...Youll need something, When waves arent working at one place you drive around a bit.
