Girl travelling alone« on: April 01 2005 07:04:00 »
Hi, I'm an 18 yr old girl thinkin of travelling to Sri Lanka by myself during june/july 2005. I know loadza people who have travelled Thailand alone but I was just wandering if it would be safe enough and easy enough to travel and meet people in Sri Lanka too as I understand that lots of the hostels are made up of single and double bedrooms rather than dorms. i would appreciate any info, cheers

I travelled around Sri Lanka for 2 months last year on my own and had absolutely no problems at all. Although it's a really amazing place, I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a first trip for someone fairly young - really don't mean to be patronizing. The other thing to consider is that June/July is off season for the SW coast. Most hotels and guesthouses are shut and there are very few tourists. Aragum Bay will be in season but that side of the island is extremely undeveloped. It's up to you, just be careful and have a fabulous time if you decide to go.

I am a Sri Lankan working in Thailand. I saw your message in the "Forum" and thought that it would be better to give my frank opinion. Generally, Sri Lankans are very friendly but please bare it in your mind that there are a lot of bad people in any part of this world. Don't trust anybody too much. You are too young and ought to be more careful. Avoid traveling to North and East partrs of Sri Lanka as there are some provocations by the LTTE. I wish you a safe and nice trip to my homeland and back!!!
