Girl surfing solo in Sri Lanka in Nov - Feb« on: July 20 2005 15:07:00 »
I am planning a 3 month trip to Sri Lanka leaving on 1 Nov, thinking about doing some voluntary work out there and lots of surfing. Anyone know of any good voluntary projects near a perfect pointbreak ? Preferably a project that is not ripping off the locals ?
Any top tips on how best to get around with a surfboard when travelling solo ? Bit worried about public transport !
Any help would be great !

havent been back since boxing day, but was teaching there volunteer for two years. transport was sweet and cheep. worked in midigama, just south of hikaduwa, no probs at all. hikkas is ok but plenty of pissy bazilians seem to think that they are the only ones with rights to the place. go south and meet laid back locals.
hope it helps

I'm heading out at the very end Oct/start Nov, girl travelling solo, also planning to do some volunteer work and then potter about the place. have you found out anything much about best place to go etc? I'm thinking of going to Weligama as a starting point. Have never surfed.. well unless Tramore in Ireland in December counts... somehow I don't think so, so any tips on good place to start etc most welcome.

Hi, I was in Sri Lanka last winter and experienced the tsunami.. scarry..
I like the small town of Ahangama best, with the break "The Rock" just outside and a short trip tp Weligama. In Ahangama stay at "Seventh Sky" with Rattna, he's a good man.. Say hi from the swedes by the way..
Be careful in Sri Lanka... almost everybody we learnt to know during that time were robbed or had other bad experiences.. They are nice friendly people in Sri Lanka but there are some pretty bad ones too, they've had a very long and rough time over there...
Have a nice time and take care.. Sri Lanka's the best..

kia ora vee. i'm thinking of going over in early jan with habitat for humanity to try and be of some use to the locals, and hopefully get a few waves after the project. (kind of a glorified surf trip i guess). if so, will be on east coast near batticaloa with some other kiwis.
