Hey, I am heading to Taiwan also and I want, need to surf. I have heard that these places can pump out some swell on a regular basis.  Cheju-do-Pusan-Mokp'o-Yosu.  I do not have 1st hand knowledge of this but the web sais it is true.  Let me know which city has fatty breaks when you find out, and I will do the same.
Peace-happy wave hunting!

My bad! The list of surf spots above is from south Korea! Looked at wrong sheet of paper! Although my research has shown that the north-west side of the island is the only hope.  A place called Mac Caully beach is good.(might be called Green Bay now)  And around Dam Shui is supposed to have some swell. Sorry about the mix up!

Hey, I live in Taiwan and have a friend who lives in Danshui. I haven't heard about any surfing there though. The best places to check out are on the east coast, especially North east. Along with Daxi (pronounced Dashi) there's Hualien and Taitung. I live and teach on a little island called Kinmen that's just off the coast of China - now I'm hesitant to share this information 'cause as of right now, the beach stays empty, and I mean empty - and there's some nice surf in the summer. The water got cold about late November and I'm just waiting for it to warm up now. I'm also looking for a board - a longer shortboard, let me know if you know of any. Thanks, hope this was helpful,
peace

Brodie what do you want to surf an empty beach for? If no one else saw it, it doesn't count!

right now there aren't any waves over here on Kinmen but you never know if a storm rolls in. I don't know that much about how the waves on the East coast are right now but I do know that they're the best in the summer when the typhoons roll in.

From what I've seen in the time of been here, mate, the locals aint too keen on surfing, most are shit scared per se of that large body of water called "the ocean". So if you're looking for a teacher it would have to be... somebody who is also an English teacher. :)
