Going to start surfing in Washington. Im moving 2 Forks soon
« on: December 05 2008 18:12:00 »I hear that La Push is an awesome surf spot and itll only be like 30 minutes from where im moving but I hear that they have a shark problem there? Can anyone whos been or goes there tell me if its totally safe to surf there or should i watch out and pay attention and try not to get eaten?

« Reply #1 on: January 29 2009 02:01:00 »i've never seen or heard of any shark problelms around la push. there are more sightings, south, in oregon. one sketch place to surf, is the hoh river mouth. river mouths are notorious as shark hangouts. i grew up surfing in and around santa cruz, ca., where hwy 1 north is as sharky as it gets and i've never fel t uncomfortable at la push. anyways, have fun, good luck, and la push is a fun beach break. hit up the straights off hwy 112 in the winter, though. there are no sharks and the waves go off, if you can figure out the tides and landscape. la push is for the summer. best of luck.

I told my self it was a whale at the time, but my friend saw it too and it was definitely a shark, probably a great white judging by the size of the fin (about 2ft, out of the water)

« Reply #3 on: August 03 2009 11:08:00 »Seen 8ft sharks here and all over the NW tip of WA. As a Fisherman, I've pulled out 9ft Blue Sharks sharks right of the rocks (on both sides).
The warnings are not a joke - these guys just don't know it well enough. There's a hike on the south side of town that gives you a great view of whats outside the bay and sharks can be seen quite regularly from land.

« Reply #5 on: August 03 2009 11:08:00 »Gotta agree with Sam on this one. Been living out here for 15+ years - it aint a joke, although the sharks have not killed anyone like in Santa Cruz.
BTW - yeah enjoy the winter if you like 2ft waves. La Push is where it's at ALL YEAR long.
Best Surfing in WA is in Westport, La Push and in Northern Oregon.

« Reply #6 on: February 10 2010 19:02:610 »Dude, there are PLENTY of spots besides La Push. People that get skunked on the Strait go to LaPush as a default. Check it out:
Pretty much any spot on the Strait works on a NW swell of 9 feet plus, or a bigger west will work at some spots.
The Wedge, a big left peak near Neah Bay.
Westport is south of LaPush, and is probably the most consistent spot in the state. It has a long jetty that holds big swells, a small man-made bay that is protected and hollow, and 5 small finger jetties (groins) that are protected and have good shape.

« Reply #9 on: August 03 2013 00:08:00 »i was there heading out the quilette river there right at la push in july on my kayak and a huge great white and i mean huge was coming along side me and i stopped paddling and let it cruise by 15 feet away and it was the scariest thing i have ever seen. it burned an image in my brain. it was atleast 15 feet long with scars all along its side i really believe it was longer than 15 feet. it looked like a submarine coming at me with the water breaking over the top. yes there are white sharks there and be careful in summer months there because they are feeding on sea lions and salmon and the water is warm then
