i live in costa rica half the time and spend many hours a day surfing, i have been surfing for only a few years. but i was surfing on a safe beach, with lots of swimmers, surfers, and people and i saw a 12 foot long tiger shark. very aggressive dangerous shark. but i still go all the time. the beach was samara beach. there is always a little danger but the odds of getting attacked by a shark are less then the odds of having a coconut fall on your head and kill you, plus if your one of the people who wants to worry i would look into crocodiles attacking people in the ocean because my brother has seen them and many other people i know, lots of scary killer story's. beware. even though i am only 13 i   know my stuff.

Indeed crocks are more to be worries about than sharks, stay away from river mouth/ estuary when surfing.
Wasn't there a big croc a few months ago in Tamarindo?
