As I said at the very top, I'm willing to travel 1 hour north or South of Sydney suburbia. If so, then can you recommend any good spots on the central coast/Wollongong area?

Just go and get looking...you'll find something. Its all good when there are waves. Get a guide book and go for it. There are loads of spots south or north of sydney. Jum p in the car, head for the coast and you will honestly find a good wave if the swell is there....

I would love to just drive up and down for a day or two, but we're looking for accommodation/a beach house right on a good surfing spot. We plan to stay there for a week, but the guy who is coming out has never been to Australia before, and also wants to check out all the Sydney touristy spots as well.

What I'm really asking, is where would you go if you were in my situation - Living 30 minutes away from Northern Beaches, mate wants to go surfing, wants to go to a spot which is relatively uncrowded, not too dangerous, and breaks nicely. I'm thinking more Turrimetta/Nth Narra than Shark Island/Ours, but where would you go?
Also, do particular spots break REALLY well in certain wind/swell directions etc?

is this guy for serious? look at all the info people gave you and you ask if wind affects surf conditions?

You want to take him to North Narramatta? Now that WILL get him killed. Nothing like a bit of old fashioned territorial violence to ruin a holiday....

Go to Norfolk Island.
