Right here is the awful truth. I lived in Cairns for a year and a half, coming from the surf soaked region north of Sydney. Yes, there are waves north of Cairns at Ratchet bay - check it out in a blowy NE to SE wind and you may luck into some 2 footers dumping on the shore. Not good for Beginners but if you can surf you will find enough to wiggle on once a month or so and perhaps stave off madness. There are also waves off the reef, but you need to know your shit - there is absolutely no wind protection out there and you need a bit of wind to get the swell up. If you go out there check it in the morning or immediately after the wind swings.
Better off heading to Indo,
The Iron Ape

I worked on a barge carting logs from around near Cedar Bay and was also told of waves at Ratchet Bay rivermouth. It's crock country though and crocks don't give off much waves like Noahs or Porpoises. But yeah works something. You'd think some richos would back some wave making pools in the tropics Cairns. Left a super good job in Port Moresby years ago because of no waves.

the only people that say cairns region has no waves are surfers in the know that are trying to keep it to themselves,
or surfers that live there but don't understand weather patterns & keep missing out on the best days. For example I spoke to a group of local lads that were grovelling in a 2ft sloppy beachie when I was enjoying glassy head high peaks to myself only 35mins drive north from where they were !
Gotta have a 4wd to get the juice boyz ....

North of the yorkeys groyne- a spot called 'the cove'.It may have been ruined by a council storm water drain. Also yorkeys beach. Next spot north- Buchans point- breaks once a year.Ellis beach - hightide only."The point" looks just like nationals exept breaks once a year. Hartleys creek(sharkey) - can get ok. Next is ratshit bay-North qld's very own D/bah - except shithouse, still the most consistent spot in NQ. Last spot before Port Douglas is Pebbly Beach.
Only time you will get waves north of Cairns is when a large High situates itself over Vic/ N.S.W. and ridges all the way to Cooktown(feb to sept.) A cradled cyclone N.E of cairns and a King tide(more water over the great barrier reef) will help but surf can still happen with a big high(1030hp+) and 25knot+ se winds
