I was there a couple of weeks ago and travelled without incident all along the coast. Hotels are springing up and bars & restaurants opening - I stayed at a very nice eco resort neat to Bahia Solano. In 2007, there are no major security issues at all, although it always pays to be sensible in Colombia. However, the very facts that the National Park is open again after several years is a great sign of confidence. When I was there, I was one of several small groups of gringos - I wasn't an oddity and I didn't feel in any way concerned for my personal safety. In fact, the place has a very nice feel.

This is not true!
Its mu 5th time in Colombia over the last 8 eyaers. thhings are MUCH better. Colombians are travelling - so it must be safe!
Lonely planet named it one of the top 10 worldwide destiantions for 2007.
In short - your info is OLD news!!!!
Its now the same as any other S American country - EXCEPT Colombians are supper friendly.
Take the normal precautions, and accept the normal risks. No place is 100% safe - and Colombia is now no different than any other place

I just returned from spending 2 weeks on the Pacific coast of Colombia..for a surf trip..meet some cool Colombians and PR surfers..we hired a lancha for 2 days and went in search for waves from El Valle to 2 hours south of Cabo Corrientes..no real surf but had soooo much potential..ADVICE!!!...dont venture too much south of Cabo Corrientes..we stayed in a town call Virudo (i think) and we held for 2 hours by Paramilitary coz they thought we were drug runners and were angry that we were not going thru them!!!as they had never seen an Aussie or a surfER there before..also the pacific needs a big swell period (say 8-10 secs +) and a good size for it to work...email Memo at Elcantil.com..he is a cool and helpful guy...wish we asked him first
