mate its not cheap like indonesia, and its not cheap by third world country standards, its all in US dollars aswell so on the aussie bones it adds up fast- another dude on this forum reckons 7 U.S. a meal is cheap- i disagree with that assessment. i stayed in tamarindo for a few weeks, and the surf was pretty pus, small beach breaks. It is cheap for americans who come down by the truckload and are only to willing to tell you how much it rules there. they've never been to indo obviously. Coke is as cheap as it gets outside columbia - though you'd have to do a wheelbarrow full to make up for the overall expense though. Costa is an experience, but its not cheap.

you will need about 70,000 colones a week. So about 10,000 colones a day.

Getting laid would be the least of your problems. See a pretty young thing and invite her home. Buy her some cheap food and give her about $10 US (supposedly for a taxi home). She will take the bus and save the $10. Charlie

grub is cheap, 2 or 3 bucks for a basic pinto and piece of chicken meat. beer is average and over priced. aguadiente or sugar cane rum is a brutal drop and dirt cheap. the candy is cheaper than home but overpriced for gringos, hotels can be 10 or 15 bucks for a basic beach front cabina with private dunny. buses are only a buck or 2 an hour of travel and good condition usually. expect to pay a tax for surf boards unless you can haggle really well. the ticas (chicas locales) are gorgeous and friendly. watch out for the evil puta pick pockets chicks. the vibe in costa rica is awesome. really laid back and happy. no worries. lots of wildlife and jungle and good beaches. no political probs. just a pura vida. its a true paradise. lots of things to do when the swells flat. enjoy.

Costa Rica 5-10 years ago was cheap, relative to the US. I live in Tamarindo and think many of the posts above are BS. The price of a beer in a supermarket is 700-800 colones (516 to the dollar so about $1.250. This equals $7.50 per 6-pack for cheap beer! Some restaurants are fairly reasonable - ie. $5 for a casado (plate of fish, beans, rice). But especially here in Tamarindo and vicinity the expense is about the same as living in the US. The only cheap thing here is property tax!

crlocal has it right.
i just spent 6 months in CR.
prices have gone up so high in the last few years that
i would not consider CR a bargain at all.
groceries are expensive as are accomodations
in all the popular surf towns.
the price of a rental car is obscene so forget that.
i've heard Panama is the new CR.
