RE: are there cheap surfboards in costa rica« on: November 24 2005 11:11:00 »
Fischer bros, is the best there. They design boards and make custom boards for people. I think the boards in CR are definitly cheaper then the boards in the states. How often can you get a custom made board to your specific measurements for a little over $300 i think thats what i paid. There are millions of surf shops in Hermosa or Jaco or if you go to Tamriendo there are lots there as well. Traveling with a board is a pain, but if you bring one you can sell it there to a surf shop before coming home. I know people that got boards at some of the smaller surf shop for probably around $200 or less. They were is relatively good condition. definitly rideable.

There will be a board shop in San Jose area soon (opening in June '06). "Caracara Real del Surf" in Alajuela near the airport. There are lots of surf shops in the malls arounf SJ but just for clothes, accesories mostly. Email me for info on Caracara.

If you travel with your board it will cost $50 to $100 dollars each way (unless you fly Martin Air from Miami) There are a ton of surf shops in Jaco 1.5 hours from San Jose (Hermosa has a great break 7kms south of jaco) Most surf shops will sell you a board and buy it back. basically like renting unless you break it. So don't bother bringing a board unless you will be here for a month or so. Good Luck

there are a couple surf shops in San Jose, but your best bet if you want to buy a board down there is Jaco. PIKO surf shop (up on the highway on your way to Playa Hermosa) has the best selection of new and used boards in town, and you can even get a custom board for upwards of $400. Piko (the shaper) and Monge (the shop owner) will totally hook u up... and if they dont, there's only 3 million other shops in town.... my advice, go to Jaco, buy your board, and then head elsewhere....

i plan on going to CR for the month of july and maybe 2 weeks of august, mostly to surf, tour around, and party. i was thinking of limon, i'd like to stay on the carib. side for a while, but is it better on the pacific side? im a pretty novice surfer, but i learn very quick it seems when i surf, i do all other boardsports.
also, im buying a board down there for sure, it sounds like i should start my trip in jaco, get a board, then head to the east coast i guess.
