I highly recommend Walter's Surf Shop in Jaco.  He doesn't try to rip you off when you return the board like a lot of people.  Better short boards are harder to find.  I think maybe Fischer Brothers in the center of town maybe rents good shortboards.  Good luck.

You can rent boards in Mal Pais for around $15-$20 a day.  I was there in January 07 for about 2 weeks and I rented a board the whole time.  The selection isn't bad and there are lots of short boards.  Some are fairly heavily used and some are on the newer side, just gotta look around.

Yea so if you want a wide open beach with no surfers, try esterillos its 10 minutes south of hermosa, similar waves and so clean. there are many places to stay, you can get boards for cheap. check out my website for more info and rentals, houses/ boards. http://surfesterillos.com

I am heading to playa hermosa in March and the airline is going to charge me 200 dollars each way per board. I was wondering if there is anywhere to rent nice shortboards in the jaco, hermosa area and how much they run.

Staying a week or less it is always more cost effective to rent. Staying 2 weeks or less it is usually about the same. More than 2 weeks take your own stick.
