RE: Recommend losmen GH in Ebay Pitstop area in Mentawai?« on: September 15 2013 15:09:00 »
Those prices on that website are closeish to normal prices but a little bit higher, although there is also no such thing as a mentawai permit, but by law anywhere in Indonesia your home stay or hotel/resort must register your passport details with the local police, that is not your responsibility but the person you stay with.
There is no need to go through a website like that and Rp 300, 000 sounds expensive.
Althought there is many camps/resorts and boats crowds are still hit and miss, i would just go, the Mentawais is a place every surfer should go once.
Telos and Banyaks are a lot harder to get too or get around, very hard unless you can speak Bahasa Indonesian.

Just for the record the wages of staff at resorts/charter boats is higher than Rp 600,000 roughly Rp 1.5 to 2.5 million depending on position, this is fair price in the scheme of hospitality/tourism industry in Indonesia, but it should be noted the higher paying jobs are mostly filled by Indonesians from Padang or Jakarta.
But for somebody like Sabit who has his own home stay he can earn Rp 1.5 million in one day from 8 guest, indonesians if have money often help there family and community and most of his money would go back into his community hence the flow on effect is quite good.
Its kind of like comparing a life of working at your local restaurant or you owning your own business.

Also in all fairness charter boats have very high overheads, in fuel and maintenance, the resorts running cost even wit 24hr generators is much lower.
I think sadly the expensive resorts have a future in the Mentawais, they provide Mcdonald style jobs for the younger locals and do pay taxes even if they aren't used wisely.
And there is a market for a range of accommodation budgets.
Charter boats however hopefully have no future in the Mentawais, they provide almost no jobs to locals, buy there fuel and food in Padang, don't pay local taxes and basically crowd the lineups while damaging reefs with there anchors, with there raw sewage going straight out into the ocean, not to mention fuel spills and possibly dumping of rubbish at sea.

Thanks AK for all the info, looks like you spent a lot of time there, in Mentawai.. and i share your views regarding the we, as surfers, should travel in a independant way that would be better for the mentawai, and indonesia in general.
I am just litlle bit scared by the crowds there in October. I speak a lttile of Bahasa, enought to bargain for a boat, ask directions, and food, etc... so maybe Banyaks can be a better option.
What do you reckon about the crowds in October? 30+ guys on each spot all the day long? If I go there, u recommand me to buy food on siberut for the length of my stay before going to NyangNyang?

October crowds shouldn't be to bad compared to in season, regarding crowds Mentawais are a funny place, crowds can change from hour to hour day to day, its the kind of place you can be surfing with five guys then an hour latter your surfing with 30 guys, or it can even go the other way 30 guys out then, suddenly the charter boats decide to move on and resort boats go have lunch or something, you never really know.
Winds and swell are also a factor, light to no winds with med swell open up lots of breaks and spread the crowds, tiny swells or bad winds like south winds can cause everyone to have to surf the same wave as options are limited.

Just buy what food and water you can, and lots of food that is non perishable.
Banyaks are a different ball game, there is no civilisation/villages close to waves, so you must either camp in the jungle which is quite hardcore in the tropics with heavy rain downpours etc or stay on an island with village far from the waves and get boat everyday which is expensive.

I stayed with a local family who were building losmen at HTs 12 years ago if this is of interest. The family name is Hussein ask for dios( not sure correct spelling). Catch the ferry from Padang to siobhan then arrange local boat to katiet - villagers from katiet will be there picking up weekly shopping. It used to cost $10000 rupiah a night but sure that has gone up a lot. F**k the resorts that's why I'm telling you this lets hope the greedy bast***ds go bankrupt.

Doing the slog down from Toba with boards in tow. Nearly had arythmia when i looked at ferry prices. Let alone surf camp costs.
I've got the cash if i absolutely have to lord it, but would rather chip in to fund the local community. So if you have any suggestions for local losmens ill be sure to go to them in instead.
Mentawai passes surfing bylaw« Reply #9 on: July 06 2015 19:07:00 »
“The bylaw on the management of surfing excursions requires each surfer to pay Rp 1 million (US$76) for a 15-day period and a boat carrying surfers will be charged Rp 5 million for 15 days. People making documentary films on surfing will pay a Rp 20 million fee,” Kortanius told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
In the bylaw, said Kortanius, the fees would be collected online from six months to a year in advance.
