RE: Anyone surf Banyak and Simeulue Islands,Sumatra?« on: November 16 2006 03:11:00 »
yeah the area was great...i say WAS..because the earthquake raised most of reefs out of the water drastically affecting the wave quality many waves are gone the odd very one is better, but dont be fooled into thinking this area is wave rich like the Ments cause it's not everything from Nias west was affected in some way.
If you dont beleive me why do you think the local surf camp in the area has changed it's focus from surfing to other activities?

Simeulue has indeed changed and not for the better.
Banyak islands are the go,with nias and telo group close behind.

True, the waves on Simeulue have been been ruined by the reef uplift, i work on the island and have checked all the spots and they are all the same, except for a few but you need a solid SW swell for them. I used to run the surf camp there but gave up trying to take guys to ordinary waves.
Bohemian and other boats like Indo Jiwa,Sjalina, Nauli and Gaia provide good tours of other islands south that still have great waves.Dont go with others from Sibolga and Singkil

I'm in Meulaboh and try to find the best way to get to Banyak Islands.... thinking about taking the road til Singkil and than cross trhrough ferry... Or mayby going from Meulaboh to Banyak Islands straight away (don't know yet if there is a ferry..)
Do you have any information regarding the best way to organise a trip there... the best for me would be to visit Palau Balai, than from there to go to Nias (don't know if it is possible...)... I'd like to see Simeuleu as well... If you know anything, drop me a line!

I know you will need a lot of luck at this time of year to get decent swell in that area.

Yeh not much swell around at the mo, but you never know, don't let the low season fool you.
You can get boats from Simeulue or Singkil, not cheap anymore.
That's good that I am mentioned as not being a part of the camp on Sim,as i aint no more and it lets all of the past contacts that i sent to the place know to contact me and go elsewhere. I wouldn't go selling a product that i don't believe in,would I.

Camped on one of the islands for 2 weeks. There are waves, but u need a lot of swell. Look at it on a map, most of the S swells are blocked by Nias. We heard from boats in the area it was 12ft Nias, and we got 4ft.
As for the surf camp that may run. It'd be a pity coz the area is beautiful, and looks just like it was probably a thousand years ago. We stayed where the surf camp will be located in the future. They went thru the place with a machete. I say this to the bloke who'll run it; good luck with those Sand Flies. They're a living hell. And logistics to the place will be a nightmare.
Basically, find another place to ruin. Not this one. As it is, there's enough boats servicing this place already.

Where are you going to hang out now that Simeulue waves are ordinary? Did you end up selling your beach house to Dean (the long time expat on Simeulue) ? Major bummer about the quake huh?
