Just come back from Costa Rica and a short trip to Bocas Del Toro. There are some good quality waves there but it's inconsistent and there is not much to do between swells. I have to say I found it the least friendly of everywhere I went in Central America - there are too many crack heads with nothing to do, and the locals generally seemed un-interested and a little grumpy. We stayed on Bastimentos Island and constantly felt uncomfortable. There have been a couple of machete attacks on tourists there recently and a white girl got raped, all on the remote and barely worth surfing back beach (20 mins walk from the village) - it's a tiny, tiny place remember. Yes it's charming but it's dangerous and a bit limited.

I'm not saying don't go there, it is beautiful and it has some O.K waves - just be prepared to sit and wait and watch your back. It ain't cheap for Central America - more expensive than C.R (with the exception of Santa Theresa) and the much more than the rest of Panama. Getting around involves expensive boat trips -and with no other option, they got you by the short and curlies.
