RE: Beginner's Surf Spots around L.A.

I am also a beginner and Ventura (about an hour north of LA) has some nice spots. Take the 101 north out of Ventura, then take your first exit after you cross the Ventura river (identified by the sign "State Beaches/Solimar/Faria"). The road goes under the freeway and goes along the beach for several miles. There is a very popular beginner spot 3.5 miles down, between two groups of beach houses, known locally as Mondos (there is no sign). It is often crowded, but mostly with beginners, and people are not very territorial. To avoid the crowd you can park pretty much anywhere along the beachfront on this road and the surf will be ok, small and mushy, good for learning (you can see it from the car, so just drive til you find a spot you like).
