RE: Who has surfed in Ecudor????« on: March 12 2006 22:03:00 »
How's it going!
I have surfed both Ecuador and Peru. My wife is from Ecuador and if you pass through Guayaquil on your way to the coast I have family and friends there. I am living in Oregon now and can't wait to get back to Ecuador. The surf can get really good, but is somewhat inconsistent if compared to Peru. Although, I think Peru is one of the most consistent stretch of coast on the planet. The water is cold in Peru, but in the summer you will be fine with a short john or even bare back on hot days. Being from New Jersey and now Oregon, cold is such a relavant term.
Well, I have dreamed of doing a trip like you will do and wish you all of the best. Let me know about Columbia, I have always wondered about the pacific side there.
Best of Luck, Bill Lash

You should go to the Salinas area. You will find a dozen or so breaks in the nearby area. June may not be the best of months there, you are right on the cusp of of seasons. If it is bad travel down to the Playas area south of there where there is much more southern swell exposure. June is not the best of months, but you never know!
Best of luck, Bill Lash

Next week I am starting a two month backpack starting in Ecuador. Cannot take my board with me but would like to surf in the South.
What are my chances of being able to rent a half decent board (i.e not a chunky foam one). What beaches would be best to find rental shops?

I haven't been surfing in Ecuador for about 5 years, but I can give you information on Peru. I lived there for 5 years and still go back 3-4 times a year. If you want info, let me know

I was stationed in Manta back in summer of 03 for 6 months, alot of the beaches in manta were small for the time of year, although san mateo a short drive away was a consistent 4 to 5 feet everytime I went and had lines for days. I kept hearing about montanita when I was there but never went it was to far and the Air force would not let me go, wish I would have now that I know more info about it. Other than that its a great place to go, the whole country is beautiful and the beaches are just awesome. Nice people and great food, and the prices won't break your wallet.

hello Mike, i was thinking of heading to peru for a good few months with a bit of surfing in mind... could you tell me what it's like there? localism? i can't stand localism and would rather just avoid than deal with it. and i remember someone telling me the peruvian coast was really ugly... is this true or just slander? are there a range of breaks for different standards and what is the time to go?... i was thinking to head out around november. thanks in advance. and anyone else who knows, please tell...

Hi!, your chances are pretty good, in Salinas you have Memin Bazan who rents pretty decent boards and best if you go to Montañita where you will find more options, by this time of the year we are waiting for the SW swells, where Montañita, Shit bay and the Army base are good points, also right on Mar Bravo area where the beach breaks hit pretty good specially Ecuasal right on the pier.
All this places are very safe.
have a save trip
