I was in Hawaii in April and I agree that airlines do mess up the boards - not on purpose but they consider it lugguage and not fragile. Go Nuts along kuhio ave (a few blocks from the beach) rents longboards 30/day and shortboards 25/day. they give you a deal if you rent 2 or 3 days.

try Backpackers Plantation next to Waimea Bay.  Not the cleanest place but  it is cheap.  Summer is not  the time to be on the North Shore for waves, but a freak swell may show and Sunset may pick up some action.  They also have a shuttle into town, and now that I think about it, they have another Backpackers in Honolulu.  Never stayed there so I don't have any info on it.  Call Backpackers for infomation.  Aloha.

Hey I am coming in middle of july and it does not matter what island or what coast I go to I just want to find the best surfing.  Could someone please give me a general area (such as SW Big Island, S Kauai etc...) so i can find a place to stay where there will be a better chance of getting some good waves?  I have only been there in the winter, so I dont know where any summer swells are (even if small is the best it gets).  Thanks so much.
