RE: surf in new caledonia

Hi Kevin,

I've just moved to new cal from australia and am a keen surfer but dont know what to do or where to go. I'm working at Prony Bay. I get every Sunday off and want to go surfing so any info would be greatly appreciated. Like where to go? Are there any beach breaks or are they all reef? can you paddle or do you need a boat? Any dangers?
I was told that Borail and La Fo are the places to go but I dont want to travel all the way there and find no surf or that I need a boat. Are there any surf spots south of Noumea or in Noumea itself, all the spots seem to be north.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hey there Tom,

I'm a med student in Oz as well, thinkin' of heading to NC for my 4th yr med spec rotation.  Have you found out any info about hospitals, and maybe their proximity to waves?  Tu parles francais?  Moi je suis Canadien, et c'est pour la langue (et le surf, et bon, des filles aussi!) que je veux m'installer la-bas.  Write me if you get this one mate,

RE: surf in new caledonia

I've been to New Cal a few times, the surf isn't easy to access but it's damn good. I have never surfed near Noumea, because the barrier reef is too far out, and there's heaps of wind down there, don't thnik it's the best place to live if you're a surfer, too bad for the doctors!!
I went to Ouano a couple times and stayed at the camp, the boat ride is only 20 minutes and the left is a sure thing. The boat is kind of expensive, but it was worth it: just 10  surfers (locals included) for a cloudbreak equivalent, and in the end cheaper than staying at Tavarua!! Funny 'cause New Cal is more expensive than Fiji.

RE: surf in new caledonia

Hi Kevin,

Myself and 2 friends plan on coming to NC at end of August. They a have a deal on at the moment that works out to 8 nights, all flights, all taxes, and a rental car for $1500 – which is fantastic. The only trick is that our hotel is in Noumea so we need to work out how to get to the waves. I have researched some of the spots and see we need to organise a boat.

Do you have any suggestions on how we go about this? Do you fancy being our unofficial guide if we pay for you to come on the boat with us? I know the surf camps have their own boats but is there somewhere we can arrange our own boat? Any thoughts on costs?

Thanks very much and I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

Steve
