I am headed to Ecuador in February.  I have to option of staying in San Mateo or Montanitas.  Does anyone know which place is more consistent?  Is San Mateo mushy or can it barrel? Can you surf up there when its small at the beach breaks?

Saw your words on Global srufers.  Realize it has been a while since you were in Ecuador, but I am giving it a shot anyway.  My wife and I live on a small sailboat that is now in Libertad, Ecuador.  We will be back there at the start of the new year to keep on cruising and surfing..  I have the names and general info of the good waves down there, but all are land based directions.  We like to pull our boat right up to the break, drop the hook and surf before the morning coffee.  So, any info you could give would be appreciated.  Think like you were approaching from offshore.  Headlands, port towns, big white rocks that stick out, that sort of thing.  Greg

Graham...saw your post.  I would definitely recommend staying in Montinita.  I have went there the last two years and I am going back Jan 14 for 10 days.  San Mateo only breaks on a good size NW swell and is a small fishing village with not much to do if there is no surf.  we have a guide and truck and we surf Montanita and other breaks outside of the village.  just go word San Mateo should be happening the next two weeks...so we will do the drive up there and stay for how long the swell lasts and then drive back...best option bro.  Montinita is beautiful and if the surf is flat, well you have town which is small but fun and several breaks surround Montinita if you have a car and know where to go...hope this helps.

go get some.
