I've surfed El Salvador for years and although it is dangerous on many levels, I have never had a bad experience in the water.

Out of water, Iive only had a few ugly encounters (no more than here in the states and probably less); over all, I've found the people warm, charming and generous. Attitude is every thing and I have over the years built many strong friendships.

Then again, I've run over a few gringos out in the water as they come down for a few days acting arrogant, bold, rude and paying little, if any respect, for those around them.

You're absolutely right: The friends I've made down there all have bullet holes in them from the civil wars that raged out of control for years in Central America.
But I've also slept for weeks at a time in a hammock at several surf spots and never felt threaten for a second. Then again I didn't walk down zona rosa at 3:00 am stoned out of my mind wearing rolex and polo.

Ive worked in Central America for 17 years and the most likely place to get robbed is Costa Rica, hands down!

If all ugly Amerikans would leave their attitude 'at the border', learn the language of this hemisphere, then maybe, you would get a few, crisp waves, ceviche', and mui bien Ramona chiquitas!!!

Again, global, quit bullshitting all these nieve blond, Aryan valley boys- you're putting them in jeopardy that we're so respected; that ugly american reputation will get them killed. Just like that rapist creep who bribed the country judge, someday yoor kid will be accorded the same karma!

It surprises me you had such a bad experience. We have had a house on the east part of El Salvador for 4 years now and have always felt very safe.
La Libertad is closer to San Salvador and has way more local surfers... you should try surfing the East. It's a small fishing village and VERY safe.

You are so right!

For a girl to realize that you need to listen to the locals and not expose yourself, or do anythig to stick out like a sore thumb....you are so right.

Sorry for all your pains in my country, contact me for any advice.
