Just back from 10 days in Fiji. Get out to Wilkes passage for waves. We stayed at Plantation Island. A proper resort but cheap and good quality. Surf Trips F$40 for 3 hours and really good guide 'Little John'. if you want an el-cheapo but good backpackers resort with access to the surf Funky Fish Resort is just accross the way. BUT - it's not for learners. Or boogers. Oh yeah and we got Cloudbreak on one day, too.

Waidroka Bay Surf Camp Sucks..I was there 2 years ago and the owner was one the rudest guy's i've ever met. I feel bad for the friendly locals working there. Please do not support this camp!

Best Place to stay is Plantation Island, there are a couple of fijian guys that boat you out to the reef everyday. I had one of the best surf trips there.

Had an absolute blast at Waidroka, even though we where really concerned about staying there due to all of these posts. Place was great value for money and had the best food. Surf was on so Frigates and Pipe, as well as Serua with great waves and Frigates 6+ barrels! Owners and staff where cool and all in all best surf vacation we'v had.
Strange to see all these comments and then being there, which puts all of this into perspective. So all we can do is post our own experience, which was absolutley THE BEST!

1.Waidroka cater for surfing, surfed sick pipe and frigates, they took three of us surfing - Why should they not advertise this when this is the service they provide.
2.the staff were great and all seemed to get along.
3.the owners do run the resort a bloke from NZ Darrel and his chick do and they were lovely.
4.They had good knowledge of winds, tides amd what break would be doing what.
Forget the bad posts, we too were a bit hesitant but were really glad when we went for the drive... its a bit hectic to get to driving up a narrow and winding mountian pass but very remote in comparison to other resorts...this is why I guess at some stages its a bit quiet... its the most relaxing setting I have ever seen. They have a new pool area which the girl loved.

While looking for Waidroka property on the Internet, we came across this thread. Expecting the worse from what we had read here, my wife and I stopped in the resort to have a little lunch today. We had not stepped out of the car to commence walking in the main lounge when we were greeted with the most welcoming experience we have had in patronizing many of Fiji's finest. The rest of our experience at Waidroka Resort matched the greeting with an excellent meal and with fresh veggies right out of their garden. NEW MANAGMENT is probably the difference. Therefore, i suggest everyone give them the break they certainly appear to deserve.

Read the write ups before i went and stayed in this place and was a little concerned, however after arriving it was a different story.
This should help people understand what is going on there:
There have been a number of different owners/managers i believe over the years, however it is now in the hands of an Israeli couple. I never met them but from what reports have suggested they weren't the ideal people to be running such a resort. HOWEVER since early/mid 08, Daryl (Kiwi) and Julie (Yank) now manage the resort (ie do NOT own it but they do MANAGE it - so the only people you deal with and will meet are Julie and Daryl and not the Israeli couple). Both are avid divers and have been diving and teaching diving all over the world.
