YEP, HEAPS OF SPOTS, YOU JUST HAVE TO HAVE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE OF WINDS, TIDES & REEF CHANNELS. THE REEFS EAST OF GREEN ISLAND ALL GET GOOD IN VARIOUS SWELL DIRECTIONS. HEARS A HOT TIP SNAPPER ISLAND & LOW ISLES REEFS. (NORTH OF PORT DOUGLAS AND SOUTH OF CAPE TRIBULATION)
AND IF YOU LOOK FURTHER NORTH AGAIN TRY LIZARD ISLAND FOR A MIXTURE OF REEF PEAKS.
THE SWELL SNEAKS THROUGH A FEW GAPS IN THE OUTER REEFS.

Can you reccommend best surfing in the region - which is beach accessible?  We can drive quite a ways... Looking for the nicest surf in within 200km...  thanks!

There are NO PROPER surfing spots along the coast in Cairns!!!
Windy Sloppy Chop is not surf and that is all that reaches the coastline.(including RatShit)
SAD but TRUE. (the reef stops all the ground swells)
The answer is simple.
1) get in a boat
2) travel out 50+km (east)
3)take your pick, hundred's of km of small, fickle surf!!!!
mind you, ya need the right tide, wind & swell and even then don't expect "world class reef breaks"

I regularly surf the reef and it is good enough to get ya fix but sadly nothing like the real reef breaks in Fiji or Indo.

email me for info or if you want a lift out there.
