to the people encouraging  this champ to stay at the surf camp there i think you are all being mislead by some evil and exploiting aussie who owns it...why should we give our money to some greedy person who moves in there, burns  down the forest, planning to build a large mariner potentially affecting one of the islands best waves, brings in foreign aninmals into a fragile ecosystem  and claims the rights to the wave?? imagine if someone from indo did that oevr here in you may feel more "secure" in a nice air conditioned room with a nice pink cocktail in the arvo but as the other dude stated grow some courage and stand tall..if no one goes there than his not going be able to keep it operating... whos he to say we have to be staying at his camp before we can surf in the ocean??

Generalising that all aussies are obsessed with opening surf camps is going a bit far, but i am sorry for those of us that can find it in them to exploit a land that is not ours.

As to panatian island by land perhaps you could buy Timmy Turners "lost thoughts" dvd and see how him and his mates did it. But for a day trip...nah its too far out and you could hit the island on a (one in a million) bad day!

If you are planning on doing it by boat learn Bahasa Indonesian!!!

Hi Sam,

I was wondering if you are able to assist.  My Fiancé is currently surfing with friends on Jons Boat; Just dreaming and we are urgently trying to contact the boys just to make sure they haven’t been affected by the Tsunami.

Would you have Jon’s Satellite number or contact details as the one I have been given is incorrect (0011 62 81 3847 33334)?

I really appreciate your help!

Contact Surf travel Co they should know

I would stress too much, the satelite phone is old and takes a while to find it is in range, they probably dont know anything has happened. i was on the boat when the first java earthquake struck when the volcano went off and we didnt know anything untill we got back to land.

Panaitan island is a long way away & it is tucked up above java.i the wave was pretty local to the earthquake which is far away from panatain. it is about as far away to bali than panaitan, and nothing has happened in bali

i think this thread is useless. it seems one person answered the actual question. but the person who asked said question could have researched the net and found the appropriate answers quite easily.
anyway i have never surfed panatian, i was planning a trip a year ago or so, when i researched it on the net (after watchin 2nd thoughts) all i found was G-spot site and heaps of negativity towards it. i eventually gave up because i think the G and Matt went seperate ways and the site went down (though i may be wrong) and i read about some photog and captain being angry (yeh i understand) thus i decided against taking any of these options and surfed somewhere else.

Ok, if you realy want to go to panaitan by land you propably want to go to labuhan (take a car from Jakarta there) and rent a boat that can bring you out. The problem is that the guys in labuan aint that keen. if you cant find anyone, try the small fishing village just north of Labuan better people and bigger fishing fleet they want to do it forure if the price is right. never seen any surf camp there.....
