Busua Beach is a about 2.5 miles sandy beach without palmtrees (picture 1). The waves have been good for beginners when I was there in December (picture 2), but they broke very near to the shore so that there was no long ride. Surfing was best twice a day, between mid tide and high tide. The locals say best season for bigger waves is March / September, the rainy season. A few hundreds meters off town you find no surfers or swimmers, only friendly fishermen who bring in their net once a day or go out with their boat, a nice sight. A good place to stay in Busua is the Alaska Beach resort, because you hire a hut for yourself which has enough space for you and your board and you have direct access to the beach (ca. 8-10 US). Other hotels in town are a good option, too. For higher standards, there is the Golden Beach Hotel with bungalows (starting from 30-40 US). There are still more options in the area which I didn't check: About half a mile from the beach is a small Island which produces - as far as I could see from the shore - nice reef breaks (picture 3) which I will try next time. Next spot West is Dixcove which has no Beach, but a natural harbour. Sill, it's supposed to be a good surfing spot. To the East lies Butre where the waves are supposed to be better then in Busua, but it is more isolated because the road to Butre is still under construction. A walk from Busua to Butre leads over the hills and takes about 45 min., so it's no real option to carry the board over there on a hot African day. But the town is building up tourism and you could get a place in Alice's Hideout.
