Description

Outstanding right hand point break set in Lagundri Bay, on the island of Nias, located at Soraki Point, oftentimes also simply 'Lagundri' or more stupidly, 'Nias' (there are many other waves on the whole island of Nias). Since the 8.7 earthquake of March 2005 the Soraki reef has lifted several feet and the wave is now shallower, faster and heavier, but as perfect as ever, breaks (now) from 2 to 10 feet plus. Some say it is better than before the quake, now you can get barrelled at 2 feet, and locals say the wave is now heavier and hollower. World-class section on the outside over about 100m max; you have a steep takeoff straight into a long barrel section, then often a high wall, with often a second barrel section further on the inside if you fade it and are patient, you can also often finish with a huge roundhouse cutback, before the wave mellows out and backs off considerably, with an inside cove over about another 100m- called Kiddyland- often ridden by local grommets, but which is very ordinary. Currents always want to drag you into the impact zone, note also big sets sneak up quickly and the current can get you caught inside quite easily. One of the most perfect hollow barrels anywhere, that will have you shaking your head in disbelief at 4 to 8 feet. The wave has barely any back to it, and dredges quite heavily when over about 6 feet. At 2-4 feet it is pretty mellow, but morphs into thundering, board-breaking barrels when over 5 or 6. It picks up heaps of swell and winds are usually light, it works on all tides. One of the best waves I've ever seen.
