Good quality right point/reef break. Breaks from 3 to 10 feet, maybe a bit bigger, but getting caught inside is a bit dodgy on the bigger days, when the waves also start breaking in the channel. Hollow, peaky takeoff area, which moves around quite a bit, (typical of Taranaki waves), with powerful walls, up to about 150m long on big days. Definitely more barrels on the low tide, which suck up inconsistently on the inside section, with both ledgy and fat sections. This break is better than many of the other reefs and points in the area, as it one of the few that really barrel, many of the others are mostly big peaks with solid walls. The current pushes you north and out to sea (in a southwest swell), and there are few landmarks, making it hard to position yourself for the sets. Breaks significantly further out when bigger, so you need to watch both the wide ones and the bomb sets on bigger days. Seemed to be better with more west and north in the swell. Onshore winds (S to NW) quickly deteriorate the wave, which is very exposed, turning the hollow walls into closeout slabs of mush. Ofshore is northeast to southeast, and it really needs the offshore wind to work properly. One final point, if the wind is very light or offshore it is usually better than it looks, and worth paddling out, but it does get crowded, more so in summer.
