Description

The SURF REPORT described Santa Catalina as "a perfect point break with long, hollow waves over a volcanic rock bottom. One of the most consistent and biggest surf breaks in Panama, rarely under 4' and as big as 15-20' faces with a good swell." This is NOT an exaggeration. The place is awe-inspiring with big and consistent swell, warm water, and rippable barrels. I surfed it at 6-8' and it was incredible. It is best at medium to high tide but, if the swell is big, surfing it at low tide is not a problem. Be careful of the sharp rocks, though; they can be hazardous. It is both a right and left hander, although the right is better and longer than the left. Localism isn't much of a problem. There are local surfers (who rip!) but as long as you don't do anything stupid and show some respect you'll be fine. Enjoy!
