Long Beach is probably the most surfable spot in Cape Town, It breaks all year round and is surfable in all winds, but is best in Southerly/South westerly winds. The beach has a great viewing deck with panaramic views of the surf and the rear of Table Mountain and Hout Bay in the distance. The water is COLD! especially in summer where it goes down to 12 degrees celcius. There are great big wave spots just around the corner and about 1 km out to sea there is our own Sunset reef where tow in surfing is king when it breaks over 15 feet. The spot is in a small seaside village with a few good restaurants, one service station and a small conveniece store The nearest large shopping mall is 6km away and the closest railway line is 12km away making it a hire car destination only. There is no regular public transport to or from the beach. The sand is white and the beach is quite clean but expect lots of kelp on the beach.
The spot has at least 3 main areas of action and the crowd is well spread except for when it is small.Mainly a good left breaking wave, the shorebreak can offer some very deep right hand barrels too.The ablution facility is quite sparce without any luxuaries, plastic toilet bowls,no seats, no paper towels, some toilet paper (early in the day) loads of free condoms, lots of showers albeit without shower heads, these have been stolen for drug money by local adicts.Always lock the car and NEVER ,NEVER hide your key on or near the car, it will be stolen, I promise you. There are people who know that surfers hide their keys on the wheel or under the fender and they hang around waiting for the opportunity to liberate your car.
Targeted visitors for a fixed low yearly fee. $135 per year puts your name and link here.
