Alright, Long Beach Pier is a tricky spot, you could come one day and it would be flat as a lake, and then come a week later and would have some semi-clean chest to head high waves. I would suggest surfing this spot from August to November, when the big hurricane swells start rolling in. These swells make everything else here look like 2 ft mush, even though during Winter and early spring we receive some fun 4ft++ waves, but its a bit nippy during winter. 4/3,booties,gloves are a must for mid winter. But back to the hurricane swells, they are always glassy here where at all other spots in the region are choppy, due to the way that hurricanes and tropical storms spin, counter clockwise, creating a perfect NE offshore wind for our south facing spot, where as other spots would be big and choppy. These swells line up along the entire beach, but usually best beside the pier, with big barrels, looks like Indo. They usually last a week, all the time being fun offshore waves building everyday until the hurricane hits us or passes. These swells can get up to 15 ft, but are usually in the 4-9ft range. Summer almost always has glassy mornings, until 11 am when the winds start to pick up and chop it up a little. Afternoons during the summer are usually cleaner than the day also. It gets pretty hot during the summer, 100% humidity, 83 degree water, and temps in the low 90s during summer. Its a fun break, if you catch it right, but watch out for the locals, you might get sprayed.
