Surfing Hostels

The Best Surfing Accommodation Across the Globe

Whether you 're looking to explore the breaks of the Pacific or hit Europe's surf hotspots, you don't have to splash out on a place to stay. Great affordable accommodation can be found at hostels around the world - so everyone can catch the same quality waves, no matter what their budget.

With many backpackers and surf travelers looking for cheap sleeps, it's not surprising that hostels in and around popular destinations cater for this clientele. In addition to unbeatable beachside locations, many provide equipment hire and top quality coaching.

But hostels don't just supply the right facilities and a cheap place to sleep - sociable shared dormitories and onsite bars or cafes create a community where surfers can meet fellow enthusiasts and share stories and perhaps the next leg of their journey.

newquayEngland

With its grey sea and greyer sand, England is not quite a tropical paradise but its home to one of the most notorious surfing stretches of the Atlantic coast. Every year hordes of amateur revelers and world-class pros descend on Cornwall's beaches for the waves.

The cluster of breaks around Newquay, from Watergate Bay down to Cantrock, attract a high proportion of these visitors, especially in August when the town plays host to the annual Rip Curl Boardmasters Championship and various lively music concerts.

Newquay hostels are well-suited to the demand, with both Offshore Hostel and St. Christophe's Inn offering professional coaching from attached surf schools. Offshore, at the renowned beachbreak near Fistral, is run by top Brit competitor Llewellyn Whitaker.

Away from Newquay's crowds, western Cornwall provides an equal draw for surf fans. The Porthtowan backpackers is just 300 yards from the beachbreak and has board and wetsuit hire available - and a surf shop downstairs.

Spain

Less high-profile than the southern Costa de la Luz or the Portuguese coast, the Pais Vasco in the far northeast corner of Spain has the breaks, beaches and vibrant nightlife to satisfy any level of surfer.

Hostels in Spain are generally high-quality and, coupled with regular cheap flights, make this stretch of the North Atlantic a great budget alternative to some of the more notorious resorts. At San Sebastian, the Surf Backpackers is a few minutes walk from the hot spots of La Concha Bay.

The Pacific

From Fiji to Australia, the Pacific Ocean is a paradise of sunshine, tropical islands and world-class breaks. Oz is an iconic destination for surfers and it has quality waves and a vibrant hostelling scene to match.

Many hostels in Sydney are surf and party orientated, their cool vibe revolving around the beach. Surfside Backpackers had two locations, one near Bondi Beach and the other at Coogee, catering for surf travelers both hunting the best breaks and looking for great atmosphere.

To the north, the aptly-named town of Surfers Paradise is home to the Surf n Sun Beachside Backpackers while in Western Australia hostels like the Surfpoint Resort at Boranup Beach can be found around the premium breaks of Margareth River and beyond.

Further afield on Fiji, Surf and Dive Rendezvous just outside Nadi offers a value for money alternative to the island's luxury resorts – and a way to explore some of the world's most famous reef breaks on a budget.
