Car hire in Indo, worth it or not?! Indo rats help me out please.

Cheers guys,

Can you please help me with this question. I am about to do my first indo dream trip and I want to make it right.

Am travelling with my girlfriend and sharing expenses. I am considering renting a car for a period of min 2 weeks to more but I am a bit lost about it.

What goes on in my mind is.. I am arriving in Denpasar in march, so, maybe hire the car from there hoping for a drop point somewhere in northwest java or Jakarta or anywhere.

Other plan, Flight to jakarta or bandar lampung, hire a car from there and travel the south mainland sumatra up.

My thoughts would be, is it dangerous, is it too expensive, can I reach a lot of breaks with a normal car, is surf real good west java or should I make it to Sumatra.

Please all comments appreciated.

Hi,
I would do Bali for two weeks. From airport you can take taxi via a formal desk. Otherwise they will charge you with much likely highet price.
Three rules: bargain, bargain, bargain. And smile. They will automatically charge big time for tourists (read: white folk).
Bali has lots of surfpoints. No worries. Try Lombok is an option. Flying there is cheap and short. Nusa Lembingan is also a good option for surfing and relaxing.
Take a couple of nights in Bali to adjust. During that time ask people, hotel personnel, other tourist to do a bit of research concerning the 'normal' prijs. If you do not know, do a bet by halfing the first offer.
I would hire a driver. It is a cheaper and safe option. Driving there is like driving in a jungle.

Have fun!
